How to answer questions about safety online

Try to get to know the Internet services your child uses so that you can answer any questions he might have. You can also have your child show you what he does online. Encourage your child to ask questions and if you don’t know the answer to something, tell your child that you will find out. Then, speak to another adult who uses the Internet often, or visit your library for information.

Q. Is information that I share online private?

A. Few things on the Internet are truly private. Words or pictures that are shared online will often be brought up when someone searches for your name.

Q. How can you identify an online predator?

A. This is hard. Predators can be very clever in the way they establish relationships. Be vigilant at all times, and tell an adult immediately if anyone tries to introduce sexual content into any conversation.
